The Insider's Scoop
I had to do a ton of research for this book. While I was gathering reading material, I was shocked to find out how few books have actually been written about teenagers and HIV/AIDS. Though young people ages 13-29 account for nearly forty percent of the new HIV cases in the U.S. every year, in the whole of the New York City Public Library system I found a total of one book that featured real life teenagers telling their stories in their own words. There were also very few novels written about teens with HIV, and none that had tackled the issue the way I wanted to tackle it. It’s kind of funny how doing research for a book I had already decided to write was what ultimately made me realize just how much a book like this really needed to be written. Lucy might be fictional, but her story is playing out in the lives of real teens every single day.
The theater storyline in the book, on the other hand, required pretty much zero research—I was an actor before I realized that being a writer was way better. I’m still a total theater geek, though. J
Bonus fact: My Life After Now was originally titled On the Plus Side. I’m so glad my publisher decided to change it! (Bookie's Note: I knew that! :P)

ReplyDeleteI'm one of those who is surprised that there are so few YA novels that tackle this issue. Then again, I read YA pretty widely . . . and I can't think of any off the top of my head! I just never made the connection until now!
I'm happy to see that someone tackles this hard subject in a book. I can't wait to see how it works out.

ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you've written a book about this. I can't wait to read it. I love YA books that tackle real issues and problems.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like it could be a really powerful book and one that is needed...we have very few YA novels about HIV out there. I hope the book handles it well. I simply love the cover. Contemporary covers can be very "blah" at times and while this one is very simple...the lighting makes is spectacular and the red dress also very poignant. Thanks for the chance to win.
