The Insider's Scoop

True story – My mother told me this story ever since I was a little girl about how when she was pregnant with me, she had a dream about a tiger. She was sitting in a meadow, perched on a rock when she noticed yellow eyes gleaming from the bamboo patch. The next moment a great big tiger leapt out of the bamboo and raced toward her. She fell off the rock and flung her arms over her head, thinking she would be eaten, but nothing happened. When she sat up, she found the tiger in front of her, just staring at her. It lifted up a paw and placed it on her knee and in its claws was a red peony. She went to a fortuneteller who told her that the tiger was the spirit of her baby, who would be a strong spirited child. Whenever my Mom told me the story, she’d say how she could never forget the tiger’s great big yellow eyes. So it shouldn’t be a surprise to know that I’ve wanted to incorporate this story into a book ever since I was a little girl.

Prophecy came to me in its entirety on a beautiful early fall day in 2007. I was driving to work, stuck in traffic on the beltway. It came to me from the POV of the young prince, Taejo. He was telling the story about how he was supposed to be the hero of legend, only to find that it wasn’t him, it was his older female cousin, Kira. The only female in the army and despised for having yellow eyes, like a demon. But the reason she has yellow eyes is because she has a tiger spirit which gives her the magical ability to see and smell demons. Yes, that’s how my mother’s dream became the backbone of Prophecy. The first version of the book was flawed and Taejo was a whiny, selfish, unlikeable brat. It was only when it dawned on me that I was writing from the wrong POV that the story really got its heart.

  1. I wish my mom had a cool dream about me too.>A< I've played with the idea of having a protag who isn't the hero itself so I feel a tad bit closer to my dream of being an accomplished writer. JUST TEN THOUSAND MILES TO GO. Haha.

Thanks for sharing and for the giveaway!

  4. I love my mom's story also! I always thought of myself as a tiger because of it. So it made sense to dream up a girl with tiger eyes and tiger spirit. The story has been percolating inside of me for over 40 years! ;o)

  14. Well, we see where your story-telling gene comes from! My sister has yellow eyes, but they were green until her spleen ruptured when she was 17. Hmmm. Wonder what I could do with that.
