End of the Year Book Survey!

Jamie from the Perpetual Page Turner is running an end of year book survey. I was mentioned in Sarah of Saz101 survey and upon reading it, I thought "OMG this looks like so much fun!" Therefore, I thought it would be fitting for me to the do the end of the year book survey on the last day of the year! :)

BEST IN BOOKS 2012

1. Best Book You Read In 2012?

Okay, picking just ONE is completely unfair so I'm going to limit myself to picking...5. 2012 was a great year for books and gosh, so many were just so great but out of the 130 that I finished reading, these were probably my favourite! In no particular order -

The Gathering Dark by Leigh Bardugo (Review to Come)
The Fault In Our Stars by John Green (Review)
Skin Deep by Laura Jarrett (Review)
The Selection by Kiera Cass (Review)
Blood Red Road by Moira Young (Review)

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

I was really excited for Defiance by C.J. Redwine with all the hype that the book had going around, the blurb sounded epic but upon finishing the book I wasn't all that impressed! Another book that just didn't live up to my expectations was The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines, I just finished this one a few days ago and it was so lacking despite all the good reviews! Also have to mention Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood, Struck by Jennifer Bosworth and Instructions to a Broken Heart by Kim Culbertson! These books weren't "bad" but they definitely didn't live up to the hype and my expectations!

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2012?

Biggest one would have to be The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, I honestly didn't think I was going to enjoy it and I actually started out not enjoying it at all. I've never been drawn to YA books that were about drugs or illness or any kind of darkish contemporary but this turned out to be one of my favourite books of the year! It has also got me into reading other books for John Green! :) Also Beautiful Disaster by Jaime McGuire was a surprise! I was expecting a really badly
written cringe worthy cheesy love story and while it was a little cliched, I surprisingly REALLY enjoyed it!

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2012?

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green - HANDS DOWN. I recommend this to everyone!

5. Best series you discovered in 2012?

The Elemental series by Brigid Kemmerer was one that I really enjoyed! Both Storm and Spark were brilliant! Also LOVED LOVED LOVED The Gathering Dark by Leigh Bardugo and I simply can NOT wait to read the sequel Siege and Storm which comes out in 2013!

6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2012?

All the 2012 Debut Authors were brilliant but ones that stood out were Leigh Bardugo, Kiera Cass and Brigid Kemmerer. An author that I only discovered this year but EVERYBODY loves is John Green and I've officially joined the band wagon after reading The Fault In Our Stars.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

The Fault In Our Stars
by John Green. As I mentioned earlier, this one didn't start out as my cup of tea but I ended up loving it to BITS!

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2012?

The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore was simply non-stop action and I completely devoured it! Beautiful Disaster by Jaime McGuire was also hard to put down because the chemistry and the romance in the novel was just so swoon-worthy! And it can't go unmentioned The Gathering Dark by Leigh Bardugo which was just OMGYOUMUSTREADTHISBOOK amazing!

9. Book You Read In 2012 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year:

Not really a re-reader but if I had to pick one probably The Gathering Dark by Leigh Bardugo because it was so freaking EPIC!

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2012?

I couldn't pick ONE so I picked a few! :P

11. Most memorable character in 2012?

Augustus Water
- For his "looking on the bright side of life" approach to everything!
Gabriel Merrick - For being just completely and undeniable HOT!
Roar - For his manly charm!

Andddddd for the girls - Merit from Chicagoland Vampires because this girl is so BADASS.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2012?

The Fault In Our Stars
by John Green. (Do you even have to ask?!?!)

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2012?

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. I bawled my eyes and that's really rare because usually I'm really unemotional.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2012 to finally read?

Looking for Alaska by John Green. Everyone always talks about it but until I read The Fault In Our Stars I had no interest in John Green and hence why I only JUST read Looking for Alaska! Which BTW, was good but it ain't no The Fault In Our Stars!

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2012?

"Some infinities are bigger than others infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of the, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful." - The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
If you're not crying - WHO ARE YOU?

16. Shortest and Longest Book You Read In 2012?

Shortest - The Little Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff (which was a picture book that added up to 33 pages and it was a total cheat for my GR challenge but SUE ME, I was SO BEHIND)

Longest - Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James ( well that's embarrassing as I didn't even *really* enjoy this series but I wanted to be kewl like everybody else. That's 579 pages I will never get back)

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It?

The eulogy reading scene ( where my quote comes from) in The Fault In Our Stars was so beautiful and basically every scene in The Gathering Dark because it was so so so beautiful!

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2012

Hazel and Augustus - The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
Alina and The Darkling - The Gathering Dark by Leigh Bardugo
Avery and Kerrick - Scent of Magic by Maria V. Snyder
Aria and Perry - Under the Never Sky
Abby and Travis - Beautiful Disaster

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2012 From An Author You Read Previously

Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter. Ally Carter just writes the most amazing books and this one was no different. I absolutely love both her Gallagher Girls series and her Heist Society series. The whole idea of spies and con artist fascinate me to no end!

20. Best Book You Read That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else:

I read Perks of Being A Wallflower after watching a review of it on Youtube, unfortunately I can't remember which Booktuber it was but it was such a fantastic review I HAD to pick it up! I also picked up The Fault In Our Stars because Brodie @ Eleusinian Mysteries told me I just HAD to read it and I am SO thankful that I did because I LOVED IT!

BOOK BLOGGING/READING LIFE IN 2012

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2012?

Gosh! There are so so so many but one that really stood out to me was Rachel's blog Fiktshun. What a brilliant blog not only does Rachel write the most amazing reviews but she also hosts THE best giveaway not to mention she's a incredibly nice blogger! :)

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?

I've done a few discussion posts on the blog through my feature Breakfast with the Bookie which is basically a discussion feature that is held on Wednesday on the blog. However the best ones that I've done this year are probably - Is YA Fiction "Trashy"?,  E-Book Piracy: A Felony and Giveaways: Are We Buying Our Followers?. Yeah, that's more than one but I liked them! :D

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else’s blog?

Anna @ Literary Exploration has the most amazing Discussion post!

5. Best event that you participated in?

Probably the 2013 Debutante Event which I host every year! It's actually still going on right now! I'm featuring 12 of 2013 hottest YA debutantes! Learn more about your debutantes, their books and enter to win a copy of their debuts! Also a random assortment of blog tours etc!

6. Best moment of book blogging in 2012?

Mmmmm there were some many wonderful moments but not one that stood out! Ahaha, totally taking the cheat way out but 2012 was just a GREAT year altogether!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

Most Clicks: Happy Release Day Stealing Parker Giveaway
Most Views: Happy Release Day Stealing Parker Giveaway
Most Comments: Stormdancer US Cover Reveal + Giveaway

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

Probably any one of my reviews! All my giveaway posts get alot of love but the reviews - not so much! Special mention to my bookish mom - Saz @ Saz101 who leaves the LOVELIEST comments on pretty much all my reviews! She's such a sweetie.

9. Best bookish discovery?

THE BOOKTUBE COMMUNITY. OH LORD. Why did no one EVER tell me there was a completely different species of book lovers on the INTERNET? Best. Discovery. Ever.

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

I *just* finished the 2012 Goodreads Challenge this morning and I'm so GLAD I DID because it would have killed me to fail my challenge of not reading 130 books this year! I take my Goodreads challenge very seriously! :P I also completed the 2012 YA Debut Challenge although I don't think I finished the TBR Challenge or the 2012 YA Contemporary Challenge. Oops!

LOOKING AHEAD…

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2012 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2013?

Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. This is probably going to be my first read of 2013. I was initially going read this at the end of 2011 and then in 2012 and then now 2013! I refuse to push it back any further. Large books don't scare me anymore! ( They really do...)

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2013?

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter
The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd
My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi

And so many more!

3. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2013?

To find a balance between reading, blogging and life! I probably won't be blogging as much next year as I really have to start concentrating on my school work but I plan to be more time efficient when I AM updating my blog! :P

Tiger's Destiny

Review Time! Tiger's Destiny by Colleen Houck is the 4th book in her bestselling Tiger Saga, this is one of those series that completely took me by surprise - I never expected to fall in love with this series but I did. It's getting a little hard to review these books without giving away the story but it's all worth it! You can purchase a copy of Tiger's Destiny from Fishpond | The Nile | Booktopia | Bookworld Thank-you to Hachette for the review copy!

(Goodreads) With three of the goddess Durga's quests behind them, only one prophecy now stands in the way of Kelsey, Ren, and Kishan breaking the tiger's curse. But the trio's greatest challenge awaits them: A life-endangering pursuit in search of Durga's final gift, the Rope of Fire, on the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal. It's a race against time--and the evil sorcerer Lokesh--in this eagerly anticipated fourth volume in the bestsellingTiger's Curse series, which pits good against evil, tests the bonds of love and loyalty, and finally reveals the tigers' true destinies once and for all.

The Short Story? - This is definitely not my favourite book of the series but the ending left me in a complete mess. Absolutely heartbreaking yet beautiful and bittersweet at the same time, Houck has given reader's the ending we all hoped for but somehow with it all laid out, it wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be. Filled with heartbreak, love, pain and sacrifice, Houck's Tiger's Saga is one of the great fantasy love stories I've ever read. This series is a must read.

The Long Story? - While this is probably my least favourite book of the series, it's the one that has affected me the most. I think because it's affected me, I don't like it as much as the other ones. The story got a lot more intense and that ending left me in tears. One of the reasons I love this series it because of the romance, it's brilliant. It's got a love triangle and it's somewhat predictable but it's SUCH a brilliant triangle. Two brothers, one girl and an epic adventure through the exotic land of India. The ending of Tiger's Destiny sort of saw the end of the love triangle and it was heartbreaking to say the least. I expected it but not like this, the sacrifice was a complete mind bender and I was BAWLING my eyes out. This is how love triangles are meant to be written. The book started a little slowly and it wasn't until 150 pages into the book that I was really hooked but it was all worth it in the end. I don't know what's the next book in the series is going to be about because it seems to me Houck has tied everything up nicely, however I'm not going to complain if there is another book!

Tiger's Destiny saw the most character development in the whole series, Kishan, Ren and Kelsey all grew so much and it was beautiful to see them grow and flourish throughout the series. Kelsey is finally putting her own needs before others and learning what it means to be happy which was an important lesson for her. She's so selfless and sweet, she truly deserves true love. Kishan has grown so much from the sulky tiger we met in book one, he's learnt so much about love, companionship, brotherhood and sacrifice - it's such an amazing change to see in a character. Ren, apart from being just perfect has learnt to cherish the things closest to his heart and to hold onto them. All three protagonists have learnt such important lessons and have gone through such amazing transformation. A huge step for the characterisation, absolutely brilliant.

If you haven't read the Tiger Saga, I highly recommend you do. This is the perfect example of one of those Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover instances. The covers are quite meh but what's between the covers are decent stories with the right mixture of culture, adventure, romance and emotional development. One of my favourites, Houck's Tiger Saga is YA fantasy at it's best! A must-read!

Day Twenty-Five - All About MILA 2.0 + Giveaway

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Profile
Name - MILA 2.0 (Goodreads)
Author - Debra Driza
Genre - Sci-Fi Thriller
Release Date - March 12th 2013
Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past —that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.
Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.
Available - The Book Depository | Fishpond | Amazon | Barnes and Noble
The Insider's Scoop
I feel like I should don a navy suit and dark sunglasses while sharing this Super Sekrit Insider Info...except it’s really just Super Silly Random Info. I’m thinking my jammies are appropriate attire for that!
- I didn’t write MILA 2.0 in chronological order. The first scene I wrote was the falling-out-of-the-truck scene, and I skipped around from there. (Bad author. BAD.)
- Despite the above, MILA 2.0 is the first book where I’ve ever written an outline first and worked from that. Usually, I’m a total pantser (a word that brings back long-buried memories of my teammates in high school thinking it was the pinnacle of hilarity to yank each other’s pants down in public. Belts are your friends, people.)
- I was sure that my editor was going to think I was crazy when she read the scene where Mila starts singing as a distraction. (If she did, she was kind enough not to mention it—and the scene stayed!)
- I’m pretty sure my editor *did* think I was crazy when I first wrote the Obstacle Course from Hell scene in MILA 2.0, since it included a huge pile of cadavers. Luckily, she nixed that—MILA 2.0 vs. Zombies just doesn’t have the same ring as a title.
- In my mind, I’d pictured the cover of MILA as being more action-y and gender neutral, so I was really surprised when I saw it for the first time. But I absolutely love it, so I’m glad I’m not in charge of covers!
- I wasn’t able to travel to Clearwater, Minnesota (where Mila is living at the beginning of the book) but I did manage to convince my husband’s best friend—an ER doc—to drive down from Minneapolis, hang out in the local Dairy Queen, and take photos for me. I totally owe him a Blizzard.
- Mmmm, Blizzards
(Bookie's Note: mmmmmmm)
- Originally, the first third of the book contained a lot more scenes between Hunter and Mila and Mila and Kaylee, but we had to sacrifice them to up the pace. I’m hoping to publish the cut scenes on my website once the book debuts.
- Er, we had to sacrifice the scenes, not Hunter, Mila, and Kaylee—because that would just be weird. (Not to mention, make for a boring second half of the book. Unless they came back from the dead. In which case we’re back to the whole MILA 2.0 vs. Zombies thing. Hmmmm….)
Day Twenty-Four - All About Debra Driza ( MILA 2.0)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Debutante Profile

Name – Debra Driza
Debut - MILA 2.0
Genre – Sci-Fi Thriller
Website– HERE
Blog -  HERE
Twitter - HERE

Debra Driza is a member of the YA lit blogging group the Bookanistas and a former physical therapist who finds torturing her characters infinitely more enjoyable. She’s particularly fond of sweets, all that is random, and teen TV, and is pretty sure she wasn’t built in a computer science lab based on her inability to find her keys and master the common calender. These days you can find her at her (messy) home in California, wrangling one husband, two kids, and an assortment of Rhodesian Ridgebacks (all of which are varying degrees of naughty). MILA 2.0 is her first novel.

Dream Debutante Dress - I LIKE! Steampunk inspired dresses are SO FETCH!

Notes from a YA Debutante

I’m so excited to be a part of the Debutante Ball, woot! I love this dress because it’s feminine and tough at the same time—especially when paired with combat boots!

I’m not totally sure these will be interesting facts so much as random facts--my mind sort of flits around sometimes (not very shocking to those who know me in person or follow me on Twitter).

1. I am prone to random outbursts of singing and dancing in public, neither of which I do very well. Also, I am a virtual encyclopedia of bad 80’s lyrics. Combine the two and you get special occasions like me serenading innocent bystanders (and Veronica Roth) with Wham! Rap during SCBWI (special thanks to Stephanie Kuehn for the backup.)

2. Speaking of SCBWI-- I may have spent part of my first trip there looking up dirty words on urbandictionary.com and torturing my roommates.

3. HA! Is my favorite sleepover game, one that I try to make all of my roommates play anytime I go to a conference (why am I getting this feeling that finding roommates will soon be a challenge?)

4. If you’re at a book event and hear “Caw-CAW!” it’s about 1000x more likely that it’s me than a rabid cockatoo flying through the hotel. And if you see some crazy blond girl performing The Worm or planking…RUN!

Debra Planking at the ALA

Debra performing The Worm at SCBWI 2012
5. We don’t own any birds, but we do have Rhodesian Ridgebacks, which are supposedly lion hounds but act more like couch hounds. I’ve taken several into the show ring over the years, which can be a very humbling experience.

6. I don’t watch much TV, but when I like a show I’m a total addict. I think I watched all 3 seasons of Veronica Mars in under two weeks, and when Buffy was still on the air, I used to frantically hunt down spoilers for the next week as soon as the “Grrr…Argh” sounded on the current episode.

7. My current favorite TV show is probably Awkward!—why oh why must it only be on in the summer?

8. I was a swimmer growing up, and my hair was super blond so sometimes the chlorine would turn it green--especially in summer. Nowadays, I add all kinds of colored streaks to my hair, but I avoid green because it reminds me of Swimmer’s Hair.

9. Can we talk about The Worm again?

10. Wham, Bam, I am, a man……

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bookie's Note: This is going to extremely weird but the first thing that came to mind when I saw the picture of you planking was "she clearly works out, look at the ARM DEFINITON!" Tehehe. Debra if we ever met in real life, I want you to be my best friend and we can communicate through bird calls  and break out into a Glee worthy duet together  (not going to lie, I do that in public as well. I have no sense of shame). Can someone explain to me what HA! is? And
Make sure to come back tomorrow for the second half of Debra's feature! We have some juicy secrets lined up and a fantastic giveaway!
Book Profile
Name - Pivot Point (Goodreads)
Author - Kasie West
Genre - Contemporary Paranormal
Release Date - February 12th 2013
Knowing the outcome doesn’t always make a choice easier . . .
Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with—her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.
In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school—but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the Compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through . . . and who she can’t live without.
The Insider's Scoop
It’s fun to find out some “behind the scenes” making of a book. So I thought I’d share a few tidbits of how Pivot Point became Pivot Point.
1) My husband named my book. I had no idea what to call it.
2) The ending of the book was changed multiple times because apparently I was being a little too mean to my poor MC and my editor thought we needed a more hopeful ending. I kept trying to add as little as possible and she kept calling me out on it. I’m very happy she did because I love the way it ends now.
3) Another reason to thank my editor? She thought the big kiss should be sooner so there could be more kissing. I agree. More kissing is better.
4) My favorite character to write was Laila, the tough best friend of Addie. She was so much fun and had such a strong voice that part of book two is told through her POV.
5) Pivot Point takes place in Texas. My husband and I once had a 6 hour(!) layover in Dallas and decided to explore the city. There are a few nuances in book 1 and a scene in book 2 that are lifted straight out of that exploration.
Debutante Profile
Name – Kasie West
Genre – Paranormal Contemporary
Kasie lives with her family in central California, where the heat tries to kill her with its 115 degree stretches. She graduated from Fresno State University with a BA degree that has nothing to do with writing and is now working on her PhD in Junior Mint Eating.
Dream Debutante Dress -  Bookie's note: So simple and elegant! It's even white! What a beautiful dress selection! :)
Notes from a YA Debutante
I’m so excited to be one of the 2013 featured debutantes. When I was shopping for this dress they said they’d throw in Mr. Darcy with purchase. I started to ask if they meant the Collin Firth version or the Matthew MacFadyen one then I realized it didn’t matter.
So as evidenced by my dress selection, I’m a fan of Ms. Jane Austen. I was an avid reader long before I tried my hand at writing. Outside of writing I like to wakeboard….well, I try to wakeboard, I’m not very good. Mostly because I’m scared of injuries. This is an unfounded fear, I’ve only broken a bone once and it wasn’t while wakeboarding. It was actually while walking through a parking lot. I tripped over a parking curb while carrying a baby seat. Broke my wrist. So technically I should be scared of parking lots. Or baby seats. But I saved the baby!! Yes, I’m a true hero. My wrist can now tell me when it’s going to rain.
Speaking of baby seats. I’ve had to carry four different baby seats through dozens of different parking lots in the course of my life. There were actual babies in those seats as well. But I don’t have any more babies. My oldest is a Freshman in high school. And my youngest started school this year. I will go cry now.  It was a short cry because I remembered how much writing time that gives me. Yay for writing time!
I actually have lots of writing time because I have the world’s most supportive husband. I met him in college. He played basketball. Yes, a book nerd married a 6’8” jock. Turns out he likes books too and I like to watch sports. We fit well. Plus, he doesn’t mind that I brought Mr. Darcy home from the dress store. He agreed that it was a very good deal with purchase.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bookie's Note: Kasie, your life is like a YA contemporary novel! The book nerd falls in love with the jock who likes to read too! Perfection! Now I'm inspired to go to college in America! I haven't read any of Jane Austen's books but your enthusiasm over Mr. Darcy makes me want to! (Perhaps next year!) I've never wakeboarded before, it always looked so dangerous and I'm not exactly the most outdoorsy person but I must give it ago sometime!

Make sure to come back tomorrow for the second half of Kasie's feature! We have some juicy secrets lined up and a fantastic giveaway!
