Author - Julia Karr ( Profile )
Release Date - 6th of Jan 2011
Genre - Dystopian
Nina Oberon's life is pretty normal, she hangs out with her best friend, Sandy, and their crew, goes to school, plays with her little sister, Dee. But Nina is 15. And like all girls she'll receive a Governing Council-ordered tattoo on her 16th birthday. XVI. Those three letters will be branded on her wrist, announcing to all the world, even the most predatory of men, that she is ready for sex. Considered easy prey by some, portrayed by the Media as sluts who ask for attacks, becoming a "sex-teen" is Nina's worst fear. That is, until right before her birthday, when Nina's mom is brutally attacked. With her dying breaths, she reveals to Nina a shocking truth about her past; one that destroys everything Nina thought she knew. Now, alone but for her sister, Nina must try to discover who she really is, all the while staying one step ahead of her mother's killer.

Character Interview with Nina Oberon
Interviewer: Hi, Nina. Thanks so much for agreeing to this interview.
Nina: Hi. You’re welcome. Our Sociology teacher said we’d get extra credit if we do this.
Interviewer: Good. Now, tell us a little about yourself. Maybe a little about your family, how old you are, where you live, things like that.
Nina: Sure. I’m fifteen. I live in Cementville with my mom and my little sister. My best friend, Sandy, lives in the mod next door. We take the express to Chicago as often as we can afford to. I used to live there and my two other best friends, Mike and Derek, still do. Also, Gran and Pops, my grandparents, live there.
Interviewer: What about your father? Where is he?
Nina: He’s dead. He died the night I was born.
Interviewer: Sad. Awful for a young girl to not have a father. Tell me about your friends. What do you do when you’re together?
Nina: Sandy loves to watch XVI Ways vids, all the time. But, I can usually talk her into going into Chicago. It’s lots more fun there. Well, except for the verts. Skivs! I hate verts. Unlike Mike, who thinks they’re funny. My friend Derek’s a musician, and so we usually end up in a music store, listening to the latest from Astro-Lite or Van Stacy. I am completely blotts about Van! Have you heard his latest – Galactic Rewind? Brills!
Interviewer: Guess I’ve missed that one. So, it sounds like you and your friends have normal teen activities. The purpose of this interview, besides getting you extra credit is to survey lifestyles and interest of low tiers. Exactly what tier are you?
Nina: Ummm... well, I guess I’m a tier two.
Interviewer: Ah. So that means you’ll be registering for FeLS, doesn’t it? Good. How close is your sixteenth?
Nina: A couple of month away. And, no, I’m not registering for FeLS. My mom doesn’t want me to. I’m going for my creative designation instead.
Interviewer: Interesting. At any rate, you must be excited about becoming a sex-teen. Have you decided who your first will be?
Nina: Excuse me. I’ve really got to get back to class.
*Interview note: Subject became agitated when asked about her tier and her upcoming status change to sex-teen. Not at all characteristic of the other sixteens I’ve spoken with. An anomaly, no doubt.
